Election
Well, isn't this a lot more fun than last time? And the time before that? And the time...well, you get the idea.
I wasn't ambitious enough to liveblog or anything, but I've been following the election results as closely as anybody (aided by the fact that it's part of my job). We all know about the House, but I'm gonna go ahead and call the Senate for the Dems too. Unless Allen finds some way to switch 7,000 votes in a recount (think about that--not just that 7,000 ballots have to be wrong, 7,000 ballots have to be wrong net in your favor...the odds are not good), this one is over. Democrats control both Houses of Congress. I'm still sort of in a state of euphoric disbelief.
I'm sure some of this giddiness will wear off with time, but I wonder how many periods of being in a shitty mood I've been in over the past six years due to Republican dominance? Seriously, can an election change your general mood? I'm not asking hopefully or anything--I'm a pretty happy guy. But in the course of a normal day I'll get briefly pissy about one or two things, like most people I think. Not today. Can this continue? Probably not, but it's interesting how much of ourselves we invest in politics.
My one thought to share as people struggle to own the monopoly on What The Election Means: this is very much a rebuke to the Bush Administration. America doesn't necessarily want cooperation here. Naturally, they want things to get done, but they're angry too--they want accountability. Look at the exit polls. They want Dems to stick it to Bush, and they should have the guts to do so.
